    Skimming

In both traditional and modern plastering techniques, the final layer is referred to as the skimming coat. This finishing layer can be put on between 2mm and 6mm thick and when applied by a skilled plasterer leaves a flat smooth surface which is ideal for paint or wallpaper.

When plastering new work such as an extension, this skimming is applied on top of backing plaster, sand and cement render, or plasterboard. However, for many years now, plasterers have been applying a new fresh coat of skim on top of existing older walls to refresh and modernise properties.

In order that the new coat of finishing plaster sticks to the old surface, I paint a strong solution of adhesive onto the wall first so that it sticks with a high strength bond. I do this to make sure that your new smooth walls will look great for many years to come.

Of all the various plastering techniques, it is the skimming coat which many people often refer to as the ‘real art’ of plastering. The ability to apply the soft wet plaster to a wall and work it so that the final finish is flat and smooth takes many years to master. This is definitely a job which can not be taken on by an amateur and is, without doubt, a job for a professional.

With over twenty years experience skimming in both commercial, industrial and residential properties, you can rest assured that your plastering is being undertaken by a time served professional plasterer with lots of skimming experience.
